What are the college selection criteria?
Any student who completes his / her graduation gains domain expertise in that subject. Post graduation is required to develop the skills which will lead to a successful career path. Many colleges are run science courses without a laboratory.Very important foundation of student life- high school is usually in packed classrooms, busy schedules, and minimum infra structure.
Three or four year’s graduation is again a struggle for student to understand and excel in the field. Many students don’t have choice to select the college/ course as it is based on the performance in entrance exams. As we have many private universities it is again their own admission process. When we reach post-graduation what is important to a student? A campus? Past Glory to boast off? Infra structure? Faculty? Specializations? Placements? Co curricular activities? Internships? Workshops? Hangout spaces? Sports facilities? Frequent shooting spots? Celebrity visits? Foreign collaboration? Accreditations? Fees? Foreign trips? Swimming pools? Sophisticated Gym?Most of the students are confused in selection of colleges/universities. Ranking based on few websites which don’t reveal on what basis they are ranked. Feedbacks given by anonymous users, digital marketing analytics, social media advertisements etc add to the complexity and confusion. SEO has become daily routine to every college to ensure their visibility. One has to question its validity? Who ranks whom? Why? How? When? Where? No criteria at all. Whoever spends more money they are No 1 Self-proclaimed ranks forms the basis for rankings. Social media makes everyone a Hero with Digital presence causing the confusion.Whereas at the post-graduation level where the specialization, teaching faculty,their experience, industry interaction, internship, and finally placements matter the most. Colleges focus on lush campus, sports, celebrity visits, star status etc. we tend to believe the ratings given by anonymous users rather than known persons. No doubt, Coffee shops, beauty salons, super markets, eat outs, hangout spaces, recreation clubs, open air theaters makes campus a most happening place. But are we looking for only these facilities other than teaching and placements? Are these the criteria to select the campus? Student is paying for these facilities or for education and placements? Can these facilities give bright career to students? Seat in a prestigious university/college is status symbol to parents. But are these facilities give elite status to parents? Parents need to remember that we are paying to these facilities rather than to education. Universities/colleges are for studies and not theme parks or amusement centers to promote these facilities. Post graduation is just not another 2 years in a student’s life. IT IS THE END OF THE ACEDIMIC LIFE AND START OF CAREER. A wrong choice may spill water on total 16 years of student’s education.
